Edge Computing and its Impact on IoT

As I’m doing more and more development work on one of my IoT projects I’ve started to document the data processing requirements which has raised some interesting issues around what data I want processed where and when and how is this ‘new’ data then shared with other objects and systems.

Processing data where and when it is generated

This idea is currently referred to as Edge Computing.

Edge computing pushes applications, data and computing power (services) away from centralised points to the logical extremes of a network. Edge computing replicates fragments of information across distributed networks of web servers, which may be vast and include many networks.

The relevance for my IoT project is that I can use this technical approach to analyse generated data in real time and wrap business rules around this.
